Default Favourite Gangster / Crime Films?

Hey everyone.

I've watched two films about criminals /criminal organizations that have blown my mind this week: Eastern Promises and Sexy Beast.

Both stayed with me long afterwards, and were really surprising and enjoyable.

The thing I suppose I liked most about them was how both were based around the UK. Eastern Promises was about the Russian Mafia based in London, while Sexy Beast was based around English Gangsters and an ex-pat gangster retired in Spain.

Sure America has Las Vega, Cuba before the revolution, Al Capone, the Italian Mafia etc etc, but there is something much more sinister about gangsters in the UK IMO.

They are doing the same things as their cross-Atlantic counterparts, but they are far less glamorous and alot more intimidating IMO. Plus its always grey, rainy and gloomy cause its set in London lol.

Anyway, this isn't necessarily a discussion of UK vs. U.S when it come to gangsters. Instead, its about listing some of your favourite films about gangsters or criminals of any sort, so not necessarily Sicilian mafia types. But others as well.

Scar face has to rank right up with the all time greats.

Other than that: Layer Cake was good. Love, Honour and Obey is great (it's a fairly small film but try and track it down if you can)

Pulp Fiction, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch. All highly comedic, but my all time favourites.

Pretty much all of Guy Ritchie's crime films are quite entertaining.

For old school style gangsters I liked Gangs of New York. Also Scarface & Layer Cake like Norm mentioned. Others are American Gangster, Public Enemies and a bunch I can't think of now. Shit, there's actually bucket load of gangster/crime films I love. It's actually one of my favourite genres.

Scarface
Pulp Fiction
Godfather (good god, noone else has mentioned this one yet!)
Snatch
Gangs of New York
Eastern Promises
Etc...
Yeah, plenty of good films about gangsters. Picking a favourite isn't easy as they can't all be judged by the same criteria.

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot to mention The Godfather.

One of the best film scenes ever IMO:

rock n rolla, if it counts, and obviously lock stock and two smoking barrels, and snatch, UK is definitely one upping the American counter parts IMO.
