I totally agree, it isn't Alien or Aliens and it beats the xenopants off Resurrection and the AVP series (let's face it, Paul W.S Anderson couldn't direct traffic) but...

... I think after all the misfires they had with storylines, that was the plan with 3 in the end, drop the all out war between masses of Aliens and humans and go back to one creature, some people and a claustraphobic atmosphere to bring it to the horror genre again but put a spin on it with adjustments to the Alien's design and update the look for the 1990s market.

Keep in mind also, that Fincher was brought in at the end of a right cluster-fuck of a production, it was his first film too and...

... there wasn't even a script. Yes, really, it was basic storyline and some ideas that writers and producers had rattling around in there heads.
The only thing they had that was concrete was that Sigourney Weaver was in it and she was also producing it, and yet, even she wasn't sure what was going on.

Hats off to Fincher for actually getting the thing filmed in the first place (even though it was shredded in the editing room by studio executives anyway).

Yeah, In general I agree, though one tine thing, if you think of resurrection as a comedy film it isn;t s bad. Still bad, but not as bad as a Paul Witless Stinkfest Anderson film.

I've read the William Gibson draft and thought it was terrible. There were a couple good ideas in there but overall I thought it was weak. I've found that Alien 3 grows on you. True, the special effects look a little odd, but frankly, I think they worked better than some of the CGI you see today, twenty years later. It has a darker atmosphere than the first two movies and I think Fincher did a great job of keeping things fresh. I think a lot of monster movies start with a good first installment, add some cool stuff in the sequel and then ruin it in the third by just adding some weird crap, like the creatures in Tremors 3 who could fly with exploding farts. I like that they were able to create and maintain tension with just a single monster with only a few slight changes to it's design.

Lol @ exploding farts. I think they ended up calling the creatures "Ass Blasters" didn't they?

Suppose it's a right of passage with movies. Get a good idea, then stamp on it:
Star Wars 4, 5 & 6, good. 1, 2 & 3 fecked it all up.
Predator, Pred 2 and Predators, good. AvP fecked it all up.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 1, 2, & 3, good. 4 fecked it all up.
Alien 1, 2, & 3, good. Resurrection and AvP fecked it all up.
Matrix, good. 2 & 3 fecked it all up.
Terminator 1 & 2, good. 3 & 4 fecked it all up.
Elm Street, good. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 fecked it all up.
Superman 1 & 2, good. 3, 4 & Returns fecked it all up.

You can probably see where I'm going with this.

Ah, I've not posted any spoilers though ;)

I'd recommend watching the theatrical release first, then the Definitive Edition. You'll enjoy the movie either way though.

Edit: You can't really tell there were any production problems with the film while watching it though.

thanks.

But I must add, Aliens was the best out of the whole lot, the predator and AVP films included.
