Starship Troopers.

Something that I hear Wargamers shouting for are movies based on our beloved hobby. Something that really encapsulates the 40K universe both on screen and in spirit.

All I know at the moment, is that the Ultramarines movie is a mixed bag for the fans, some say it's crap, others enjoyed it, though I guess a divide is to be expected with any movie.

But would I be right in saying, that the best we have, and probably the closest we will ever get to a 40K film...

... is a story that our beloved hobby borrows from (not heavily, but certainly in some ways), was written years and years ago and was turned into a movie nearly 15 years ago?

Wait.
Sony are rebooting the ST with a Verhoeven-less take on the book.

It's non-augmented human troopers in PA against bugs (who have their own plasma guns).

40k itself borrows from too many tropes to be summed up by just one movie.

Hey! Where'd ... Everybody ... go?

I do see a simularity between the troopers and IG.

Well, the IG connection is there with the way they look and the vast troop numbers etc...

... but imagine Cadian Shock Troops v Tyrannids.

What the movie shows is exactly that.
'Mobile Infantry' are Cadians, 'Fleet' is a representation of 40K Epic, 'nids are represented by the 'Bugs'.
The full on immorality of humans and the line spoken by the squad Captain in the film 'Kill anything that has more than two legs' certainly hits on the 40K Imperium way of life.
If it ain't Human, shoot it.

But am I right to say Starship is the closest to a 40K movie? I certainly think so.
If there are any other movies out there that anyone knows of that sums up a big chunk 40K in one big lump, I'd like to know what they are.

He wasn't a captain, he was an Lt.

Event horizon has 40k elements in it.
ST has some elements in it.
Even Fifth element has some parts that also gel with 40k.

ST is not about puny little squashies in cardboard armour against bugs.
It's puny squishies in jump infantry powered armour who toss nukes about with gay abandon, and who have talking bombs.

Even Hellraiser has 40K elements in it, if Cenobites aren't Slaanesh Daemons I don't know what is!

Lots of films have been played with in coming up with concepts for 40K, Dune is another that comes to mind and I would say comes closest to my view of how the 40K universe could/should look. Alien is clearly where the Genestealers come from (before GW went all out on the Nids) and was an influence on Space Hulk. I would even go so far as to say Star Wars sort of fits, if you flip the setting a little you have an almost exclusively human empire fighting against the sorcerous and evil Jedi (Chaos cultists?).
