I mean religion, gods, God, were all just creations of man to explain away the infinitely large concept of their origins and the uncertainty of their lives and deaths. You have seen it all across history that the major religions of the world have changed, morphed, incorporated, and expelled different aspects of diety worship. As the culture and the times changed the need for those gods eventually disappeared and they became neutered from a spiritual perspective. Man explained how lightning worked, vis a vie, Zeus no longer needed to exist.

Had they starved the god out via lack of worship, a new concept of the afterlife, who ruled and ultimately if it was ruled over by an entity at all would have changed to fit the social belief of the people that formed the new concepts.

So you are sugesting that with time and the explenation of everything that we can hear/see/feel there would come some sort of death cult to explain what happens after death instead of one telling you how to live?

No I am simpy saying that religion changes with the times the progression of mans understanding. That the concept of the afterlife has changed many times over the course of human history, and even within various religions over time.

However, one could postulate the theory, that if, not that I personally believe that it is possible, if humanity was ever to reach a level of cosmin understanding that everything in the universe was explainable, then yes a cult like that could develop. Hell, I am sure there is some group of wackos out there already, who have forgone the pursuit of moral living in deference to exploring the finality of death. Look at the crazy suicide pact cults that you read about in the news. Not everything will become main stream.

For more about what Midge is talking about..go watch Flatliners.. which pretty much is what he's talking about, the draw of what happens after death has always been a very big mystery to everyone on the planet. Most however chose to just leave it at that...then there are others who want to breach that mystery...or drink the koolaid.

I'll take an actual quote from one of my characters in a novel who is a religious hating priest-killer, "What Man does not understand, he creates a God for. Only when Man truly understands everything, does in in turn kill God." or "The only true heresy is religion itself, worship nothing save for your deeds and your own humanity."

But you missed the main point. I'm not trying to talk about religion as a study or anything. I originaly said in my post that these Gods aren't myths and that they are real (in this film) so that whole thing you typed up dosent answer my question. What are your thoughts assuming that they were real; Why do you think they would abbandon the gods if their souls depended on their salvation? I think that you did answer it (in part) at the very end but I'm not sure I fully understand what you meant? Do you mean to say that by starving them of their prayers that the "afterlife" wouldn't be relient on the gods and that the souls would just exist without their guidance?

I don't think their souls depended on the gods for any sort of salvation. With what little Greek mythology I remember from school, the souls of the dead all go into Hades, which isn't inherently an awful place. Just a kind of gloomy field sorta place. There isn't any kind of glorious heaven to lose. And who knows? In a world of giant scorpions, blue fire creatures, mastercrafted force weapons and giant sea creatures capable of eating a planet, there has to be some kind of item somewhere that allows you to become a god. Maybe stock up on enough god-weapons or something, hell I don't know.

And I love how absolutely nothing on the internet involving anything remotely similar to religion can be discussed without having at least 1/3 of the people involved in the conversation inserting their own postulations/theories on the afterlife.
