When I started, I read the book, and figured out what units I liked. Then, I went through about three or four pages of this forum looking at threads at the game point I wanted to play. Then, I wrote a list based upon what I like and the advice that I thought was good from this site.

Though, if you have not bought all or most of your models, my advice would be to buy the new codex in January and go from there.

Yup, new nid players should delay just a little.. the new dex should change the feel of a lot of units and hopefully see new plastic kits for the metal models.

If you want to start getting some models sorted out then you cant go wrong with gaunts and genestealers... but stay away from fex/tyrants/warriors as you may well want to change their weapon set up when you see hoe their options/rules change.
